For millions of Republicans the unthinkable has happened. Donald Trump will be their presidential nominee. He has won it in as nasty a way as possible. He repeatedly blasted the establishment and trashed his opponents. He even went so far as to tie Ted Cruz’s father to Lee Harvey Oswald, President Kennedy’s assassin.
So what are they to do? The idea of either Trump or Clinton as President makes them shiver. I think they should look back at two past insurgencies; Goldwater in 1964 and McGovern in 1972. They were both hostile to the establishment, although not to the same degree as Trump. Both candidates were horribly beaten. In both cases the party won the presidency the next time around. Like everyone else, I’ve been wrong about Trump all along but I believe he has little or no chance to win in November. Democrats will start with a huge electoral advantage. Trump already has a 70% negative rating and remains a loose cannon. I think these unhappy Republicans need to practice political triage. Triage has saved countless lives by letting doctors get to the patients they can save. Political triage works the same way. If they can’t save the presidency, they need to focus on saving the Senate. A number of Republicans from blue states are up for reelection. If the Republicans control both houses of congress, Clinton will be unable to get legislation passed. Meanwhile the GOP can get ready for 2020. As they get ready for November Republicans need to realize that half a loaf is better than none.
