Every presidential administration tries to put a positive spin on events. However, the Obama administration has no respect for the truth, the American people or the news media.
There are many examples. One of the architects of Obamacare talked about them depending on the stupidity of the American people. President Obama repeatedly lied when he said we could keep our doctor and our insurance. The White House tried to explain the Benghazi attack as a demonstration. Demonstrators don’t have assault rifles, mortars and rocket-propelled grenade. Now we have another story about their deceptions and their arrogance. In an interview Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes seemed to brag about how they could get a naïve press to say anything they wanted. He talked disdainfully about their youth and inexperience. They put forward the story that negotiations began on the Iran treaty when moderates won an election. That was an out and out lie. I would like to think things will improve with the next administration. Given who is running, I think it will only get worse.

For millions of Republicans the unthinkable has happened. Donald Trump will be their presidential nominee. He has won it in as nasty a way as possible. He repeatedly blasted the establishment and trashed his opponents. He even went so far as to tie Ted Cruz’s father to Lee Harvey Oswald, President Kennedy’s assassin.
So what are they to do? The idea of either Trump or Clinton as President makes them shiver. I think they should look back at two past insurgencies; Goldwater in 1964 and McGovern in 1972. They were both hostile to the establishment, although not to the same degree as Trump. Both candidates were horribly beaten. In both cases the party won the presidency the next time around. Like everyone else, I’ve been wrong about Trump all along but I believe he has little or no chance to win in November. Democrats will start with a huge electoral advantage. Trump already has a 70% negative rating and remains a loose cannon. I think these unhappy Republicans need to practice political triage. Triage has saved countless lives by letting doctors get to the patients they can save. Political triage works the same way. If they can’t save the presidency, they need to focus on saving the Senate. A number of Republicans from blue states are up for reelection. If the Republicans control both houses of congress, Clinton will be unable to get legislation passed. Meanwhile the GOP can get ready for 2020. As they get ready for November Republicans need to realize that half a loaf is better than none. Once again an anti-Trump demonstration has turned violent. At least one Trump supporter was bloodied. A police car was damaged and there were reports of rocks thrown at police. Around twenty people were arrested.
Donald Trump called them thugs. White House spokesperson Josh Earnest painted a much different picture. He talked about our long history of protest and compared them to the patriots that staged the Boston Tea Party. He did go on to oppose violence and interference with the political process. As much as I hate to agree with Trump on anything, I’ll have to go along with his characterization. Certainly anyone has the right to gather and stage a protest. I don’t care if they are Communists, Nazis or nut jobs with aluminum foil hats. However, they must be peaceful and respectful of others. Unlike the Boston protest in 1773, these people are not out to gain rights. Instead, they want to deny rights to others. They want to stop Trump from speaking and his supporters from hearing him. One man justified the violence because of Trump’s hate speech. There is a growing trend of violence on the fringe left. I saw what happened in the 60’s and don’t wish to see it repeated. |
